Moving Object – By LINK Dance Company (WA)
Works choreographed by Rachel Ogle, Alessio Silvestrin and Kynan Hughes
Now in its eleventh year, WAAPA's postgraduate dance company, LINK, present Moving Object, featuring three new contemporary dance works, We Are Made of Stardust by Rachel Ogle, Zodiac Dialogues by Alessio Silvestrin and The Opposite is True by Kynan Hughes.
WAAPA graduate Rachel Ogle returns to the Academy as a choreographer with her new work, We Are Made of Stardust which explores our intimate relationship to the cosmos, and the interconnectedness of the universe to our elemental core. Ogle says she was inspired by "the infinite scale of the macrocosm – from the microscopic, to the grandiose – this magnificently beautiful and simultaneously destructive totality is the matter from which we all are born, and one day will all return."
Rachel has performed nationally and internationally with Phillip Adams' BalletLab; Perth's Buzz Dance Theatre, Kompany Kido, and Hydra Poesis; Hong Kong's City Contemporary Dance Company; Nigeria's Ijodee Dance Company; Amsterdam's Unfinished Company; and the global 50collective. She has been three times nominated for Most Outstanding Female Dancer in the Western Australian Dance Awards.
Italian dancer/choreographer/musician, Alessio Silvestrin presents Zodiac Dialogues, a work that finds its intentions in a fusion with the dancers and Stockhausen's Tierkreis, a music score with 12 melodies representing the 12 signs of the zodiac. Of the work Silvestrin says, "Aspects inspired by the constellations are combined with drawings and expanding qualities of tension in configuration with individuals participating to a cyclic abstract narration of flexible expressive scale."
The Opposite is True, choreographed by another WAAPA graduate and ex-Sydney Dance Company member, Kynan Hughes, started as a work about communication and how one word or action can change everything. As the work took shape, it shifted and became an amplified reflection of the dancers own group dynamics. Set to an electrifying mix music from The National Trent Reznor, Murcof and ZeeAvi, it examines how we constantly affirm our sense of self and our place in the world by analysing, comparing and assessing the words, actions and behaviours of others. The movement material is a continual dialogue, with the dance translated back and forward between the cast, while they each place their own intent and emotions into the structure and the physical language of the piece.

Great performances from the WAPPA students. An interesting program that presented three very distinctly different pieces. The Choreographers and Performers should be very proud of their work. Thank you for bringing this show down here to Melbourne audiences.
We are originally from WA, and used to attend WAAPA performances regularly, so it was great to see such talent in Victoria. All three pieces were performed very well, with good choices for the music, as well as the costumes and lighting. I probably preferred the first piece, and even found the Stockhausen piece strangely relaxing. A top performance and such a delight! Many thanks.
I particularly enjoyed the last piece which was visually stunning. I loved the choreography, and the costumes and lighting complemented it really well. Professional performance.
