Damien Dempsey, Richard Frankland & the Charcoal Club and Mama Kin

DAMIEN DEMPSEY (IRE)
The four years since the release of his album The Rocky Road have been busy for Damien Dempsey. Dempsey also collaborated with renowned Irish graffiti artist Maser on the project 'They Are Us'. Inspired by Dempsey's lyrics, Maser painted giant masterpieces of Dempsey's words on derelict buildings in Dublin. His bold colours and style transformed the sounds and poetry of Dempsey's songs into the very definition of street art on the Dublin cityscape.

Since his first live outings in the mid-1990s, Damien's gigs have seen him wow audiences across the globe. These outings have been captured on two recordings: Live at the Olympia and Live from Vicar Street. Earlier this year saw him take his show across Australia, playing a series of sell-out shows all over the country as well as a packed-out appearance at Bluesfest.

RICHARD FRANKLAND & THE CHARCOAL CLUB
Richard Frankland wrote his first song when he was 13 years old. Since then he has written and recorded over 100 original songs about Indigenous Aboriginal culture, deaths in custody, stolen generation, voice, land rights, falling in love, culture, family and life.

Since forming in 1990, The Charcoal Club has been delivering a unique mix of blues and folk music with a repertoire that covers the occasional love ballad to a fist pumping activist anthem and represents the vast inspirational experiences of Richard’s life. Richard’s lyrics are poignant and, at times, raw reflecting his pride and love for his family, heritage and land. The Charcoal Club has released two albums titled Cry Freedom (2005) and Hearts Full of Rust (2010).

MAMA KIN
As mischievous as she is charming, Fremantle’s Mama Kin is part raconteur and all-out entertainer. With a widespread reputation for her unique blend of foot-stomping soul, heart-wrenching ballads and stirring live shows, Mama Kin is back with a swag of new songs and a shift in sonic direction.

Her new album, The Magician’s Daughter, signals an expansion in Mama Kin’s musical palette. It ushers in a depth and potency underpinned by Mama Kin’s vocals that so spectacularly hover between vulnerability and power.

Cinematic at times, with lush arrangements and bold production by Jan Skubiszewski (Way of the Eagle, Owl Eyes, The Cat Empire), The Magician’s Daughter pushes Mama Kin’s own boundaries, challenging her trademark sound. Where her debut album Beat and Holler was a soulstress’ war cry, traversing the riotous and the raw, her sophomore album takes us deeper into the human condition, where the magic lives.

Good night - I was just too tired to enjoy, especially by the time Damien Dempsey (who I went to see) came on at about 11pm. :-(

Hi Fi was a bit of a 'sticky-floor' venue, but the bands were great, lots of energy and a very enthusiastic crowd. Enjoyable gig.
