Life In Stills

Life In Stills

Multi Award winning documentary Life In Stills opens exclusively at Classic Cinemas, Elsternwick on August 15th.

For four decades, Rudi Weissenstein bore witness to some of Israel’s most historic and defining moments through his camera lenses. His shop, Photohouse Pri-Or, was home to nearly a million of his negatives, including those taken as a reporter of the UN and official photographer at Israel’s Declaration of Independence by David Ben Gurion on 14th May 1948.

At the age of 96, his widow, Miriam, never imagined she would be facing a new hurdle in her life. But when Rudi’s iconic store became destined for demolition, even this opinionated and uncompromising woman knew she needed help. Under the cloud of a family tragedy, a special relationship is forged between Miriam and her grandson, Ben, as they flex their combined muscle to save the shop and Rudi’s irreplaceable images.

Despite the generation gap and many conflicts, in this stirring documentary, both grandmother and grandson undertake a gut-wrenching quest that also comprises many humorous and touching moments – one of love, courage and compassion.

“ One of the most charming documentaries that we’ve seen here lately” Yediot Achronot

The developing relationship between the Grandmother and Grandson through their tribulations with the shop was lovely to see unfold. It was rather moving at times as the Grandmother learnt to accept all that was happening and struggling to make decisions about it all. I enjoyed the movie.

My husband and I really liked the documentary Life In Stills. It was well done, the subtitles were easy to read and the subject matter was interesting. A young man works in a photo shop with his 96 year old grandmother called The Photo House. It is a family business with a difference. They have a record in photos of all of Israel's major events including the signing of the Declaration of Israel's Independence. They have exhibitions of these photos in several countries.

However, the shop is destined for demolition by developers. The grandmother and her grandson join forced to save the shop. The bond between these two people is very strong, at times humorous and just amazing to see.

The only drawback was that my name was not recorded at the cinema, but this was quickly fixed up when I showed them the email from On The House in my iPhone.

Today I collected my tickets for "Life in Stills." The cinema staff were friendly and helpful.

I will recommend this film to others as the storyline depicts a frank, honest and loving relationship, and its development over time, between a grandson and his grandmother.

Decades of photographs portrayed aspects of Jewish history, but I particularly liked following the caring and involved approach of the grandson. His kind, but 'no nonsense' manner, encouraged his 96 year old grandmother to accept change in her environment and to engage positively to the advancement of the family business.

So often the elderly are made to feel unwanted. This film states the opposite, even when one is restricted by age and the use of a wheelchair.

Thank you for the opportunity to see this show.

Gail Fuhrmann
