Candlelight Productions in partnership with Servants Community Housing invites you to experience life… OUTSIDE THE BOX.

How do you know when you’re home?

Inspired by the real life stories of residents in a rooming house in Hawthorn, this group devised performance explores issues of homelessness and home.

A small team of experienced actors met, dined with and got to know people who are technically ‘homeless’. They interweave drama, movement, music, puppetry and multimedia to tell true stories of trauma, loss and stigma, but also of community, respect, dignity and hope.

OUTSIDE THE BOX is a celebration of what it is to be human. It is entertaining, funny, moving, thought provoking and empowering… You’ll come away with more questions than answers, but also delighting in the art of making a house become a home.

This is an invitation… to anyone who has tried to make their own home, or who has ever found themselves homeless, either physically or in spirit. It is essential viewing for anyone who houses homeless people, shapes policy on housing, or wants to raise the next generation of leaders.

But above all, it is an entertaining show, full of uplifting stories.

Come and join us at the table.

Love Chapel off Chapel, the theartre was a perfect venue for this play. I have worked in "Welfare", with homeless people, so many of the characters rang so true to life. The actors portrayed their charaacters perfectly

I thought the acting was great and the characters were very real. They were so real that I found the play quite uncomfortable and difficult to watch. I thought the staging was very creative and interesting. There was a plethora of characters that were just as you would see them in a welfare home.
It was interesting and memorable.

Very thought-provoking play with minimal sets but strong performances. It will make you think long after the play has ended. Recommended.

I found this play very disconnected and hard to follow. I must have missed something when I read the above reviews. Maybe it improved but we left at interval (8 of us). Sorry I know the actors worked hard. Thanks for the opportunity.

who need a multimillion dollar budget and a gorilla when you have a brilliant cast and a fantastic script.
Thank yo for reminding us that love, loss, displacement and isolation are classless and that events can quickly change our social standing in a bias sociality that unfortunately has judgemental views. Well Done.

Last week I had the pleasure to attend the opening night of Outside the Box at Chapel off Chapel. This small theatre is perfectly suited to the intimate nature of the play, which explores homelessness through the lives of rooming house residents. Everyday moments create meaning and a sense of home in the residents' lives. Both touching and funny, this is not a politically inspired piece; you won't find answers or commentary. You will though get a true glimpse of the reality of homelessness from the viewpoint of those who've been there.

The concept of taking time out to speak with, and understand a bit better, people in a dire situation in their lives. Well done to the writers, producers, actors etc it was a memorable experience that left me quite moved.

A moving performance that will make you stop and think. Ryan Murphy was exceptional, its worth going along just for his contribution alone.
