JIFF Distribution presents an exclusive season of the multi award winning documentary The Flat – From AUGUST 8 - CLASSIC CINEMAS – THE HOME OF THE JEWISH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Following the Australian premiere at the 23rd Jewish International Film Festival, JIFF Distribution presents an exclusive season of Aaron Goldfinger’s documentary The Flat. (Image attached).

Hidden secrets, strange relationships and a past cloaked in denial confront filmmaker Arnon Goldfinger as he unearths family skeletons in The Flat, an award-winning documentary steeped in intrigue.

After the death of his grandmother at the ripe old age of 98, Goldfinger embarks on a treasure hunt in the Tel Aviv flat she shared with his grandfather since fleeing Germany in the 1930s. Among the dusty books and old clothes, he uncovers a stack of Nazi newspapers and years of correspondence with an aristocratic German family who are so high up in the Nazi regime it seems almost impossible.

The discovery sets Goldfinger on an odyssey to reveal the truth about his family’s history while asking the uncomfortable questions that some would rather not be asked.

The Flat has screened extensively at documentary and Jewish film festivals across the world, including the Tribeca International Film Festival in New York.

“Just when it seems that the genre of the Holocaust film has exhausted every possible angle, along comes something like The Flat.” Jweekly

JIFF Festival Director Eddie Tamir says, “It’s fantastic to be able to offer Melbourne’s culturally savvy film audiences quality international Jewish content that they can’t otherwise see on the big screen. Seeing films from countries you may only hear about in the news, and getting to know characters that you may not have understood before, can have a profound impact.”

TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT, IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU CHECK THE CLASSIC CINEMA FOR ACCURATE DATE/TIME SCREENINGS. YOU WILL NOT GET THIS INFORMATION ON OUR WEBSITE. YOU

I really liked the movie .. the direction did confuse me at time withe style of the narrator .. BUT .. it's worth perservering with as the body of the film asks some very pertinent questions and is quite content to let us ponder and be judgemental .. even to the point of looking at ourselves as to our way of existing. Jewish people, by the nature of being always in some diaspora or another (since the Roman expulsion from Judea)and wanting to be accepted by the intellectual elite of the country they were residing in. Blinded (maybe) of the anti-semitism that pervaded the whole country .. who knows? Interesting questions never the less.

interesting however more so for people that have an interest in that period of time.... a little disjointed in how it all unfolded i thought and perhaps not such a necessary story to be told....

Very interesting insight into people and history - and the effects of a culture of silence.
