EQUUS by Peter Shaffer

EQUUS by Peter Shaffer

Dr. Martin Dysart, a dissatisfied and disaffected psychiatrist, is faced with a unique case when a young man, Alan Strang, is brought to him for treatment. In his efforts to coax Alan out of his shell and treat him, Dr. Dysart begins to unravel the complex psychological puzzle of Alan's obsessions. Underneath Alan's complacent manner, Dr. Dysart discovers a fervent, passionate, almost religious power that has both the ability to destroy Alan, and perhaps, to save the doctor himself.

English playwright Sir Peter Shaffer's international hit is a dazzling, complex, and thrilling look at passion, sex, religion, and sanity.

Another fantastic acting performance at a great little theatre in Brisbane, The Arts. Loved the way all the actors were sitting on stage at all times and the depiction of the horses was outstanding. Very hard to watch towards the end and quite confronting too, but engrossing and provoked much discussion on the way home!

Excellent performance by the cast. Was surprised they didn't come out on stage at the end.

The quality of the acting by Jeremy Kewley, Dr Dysart, and Scott Middleton who played the troubled boy, Alan Strang was so very, very good. Highly recommended.

Adam

Well acted and well directed - overall a good production - but a poor choice of materials, I thought. The play feels a bit dated in that "he did it because his mother took away his rubber ducky in his childhood" type of way. Compare this to the complexity, more modern aesthetic and resistance to simple explanations of a film like "We Need To Talk About Kevin."

Extremely good.
Set and production excellent

A fine production. Got tired of the horses at times - needed to be off more often. Some fine performances particularly by Amanda McKay who played Dora Strang. Jeremy Kewley needed technical work on line delivery though the emotional breadth of the character was impressive. Congratulations all!

The best part of this show was the set design, which was well thought through and captured the feeling that you were inside a stable.
