The House - Dom (2011, Slovakia & Czech Republic, 100 minutes, 35mm)

Eva lives with her parents in a remote Slovak village near a small city. She is finishing high school and dreams of moving to London but doesn’t dare openly oppose her father Imrich (Alois Nebel's Miroslav Krobot), a dour man who holds firm to his own ideas. When Eva's not home, he's always got his eye on the time, and when she is, he has her helping him build a house for her, brick by brick, rain or shine, in the backyard. At the same time, he spurns his troubled elder daughter Jana (Lucia Jasková) and her needy young family when they return to town, because he doesn't approve of her husband – never mind that he had just as single-mindedly once been building a house for her too. All of this starts to change when Eva (impressive newcomer Judit Bárdos) has an affair with a married man in the months before her graduation.

This is a highly auspicious feature debut from the very talented Zuzana Liová, deftly blending social realist drama with dark comedy.

A fantastic afternoon.
My partner and I enjoyed the short called "Stones" followed by the movie "The House".

A stimulating experience from a different culture than the usual US based movies.

Both the short and movie gave us the passion, the intelligence in the movie making and the description of Slovenia everyday life of a typical village so to speak with the movie, The House ; maybe the insights of the two lady director's personnel life and or experiences are hidden amongst the actors/animation actors.

Once again a great day and a thank you to the On The House for making it happen. Thank you, Emmanuel and Stella
