States of Play - Boite World Music Cafe

States of Play features some of the country's finest world and jazz exponents. Directed by Elissa Goodrich - composer/vibraphone and marimba, with Phil Bywater – saxophone and flute, Tamara Murphy - double bass, Daniel Farrugia – drums and, on the 12th April, guest artist, Ria Soemardjo - voice and frame drums, the ensemble performs Spanish (Andalusian) inspired music by Elissa Goodrich and Clare Shannon.

Elissa's collaboration with pianist Clare Shannon is long established and very productive. Each of their two recording projects has been nominated for APRA Jazz Work of the Year. Crossing Over drew inspiration from the works of Astor Piazzolla and the poetry of Osip Mandlestam and Janet Frame from the Amnesty International Anthology. Worlds Within Worlds, a collaboration with Iranian-born Australian writer and translator Ali Alizadeh was inspired by Rumi's ancient Sufi poetry and supported by The Sidney Myer Fund. In 2007 performances of Worlds Within Worlds' song cycle were included in the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

States of Play is Elissa's new world-jazz quartet. Featuring the exquisite singing of Ria Soemardjo, the group interprets the latest collection of Shannon-Goodrich compositions. The music is inspired by the music of Andalusia, and its connections to 500 year old Arabic, Sephardic and Christian traditions. With singing by Ria Soemardjo, this music will be totally enthralling.
