Himmerland

Himmerland

Danish band, Himmerland is a group of five travelling musicians, each carrying very different life stories and traditions in their rucksacks. From three regions of Denmark - Bornholm (an island in the Baltic Sea), Copenhagen, and Northern Jutland - and from Poland and Ghana, they bring a unique combination of musical experience to the band.

The Halkær Festival in the beautiful wide-skyed northern part of Jutland called Himmerland, was where all five musicians first met. This is the home of saxophonist and organic farmer, Eskil Rom and they had gathered to perform in a small concert to launch his solo album Himmerlandsmelodier.

All the musicians had played on the album, but since they laid down tracks separately, they had never actually met each other until then. Following that first very successful concert they performed at Summartóner, a Faroese festival for new music. That was such a great experience that they decided to form the band ’Himmerland,’ naming it after the place where they first came together.

Himmerland's music is contemporary, original compositions, infused with the different traditions the members bring. Travelling with their music to Europe, Russia, Canada, South America, Australia and New Zealand, the band represents a Denmark where people from around the world can meet, live together and all contribute to a sweetly simmering cultural melting pot. Their beautiful, first, self-titled album captures that vision.

The intimate, acoustic concert at the Boite World Music Cafe in North Fitzroy is the one chance for Melbourne audiences to catch this new sound.
