Blue/Orange

Blue/Orange

Lord of the Rings actor Richard Edge joins TV's Flat Whites actor Christian Heath and VCA graduate and MTC actor Kane Felsinger in Blue/Orange by Joe Penhall, the multi-award winning hit comedy/drama. The first production for Mockingbird Theatre’s 2013 season.

The thrilling tale of race, madness and power.

Blue/Orange explores who's mad and who's sane. Two psychiatrists—one new and inexperienced, the other his well-established mentor—battle over the diagnosis and treatment of a young black man who claims to be the son of African dictator Idi Amin.

Sardonically comic, Blue/Orange blasted onto the stage in its National Theatre debut in 2000 and was instantly recognised as a landmark event, winning every major award for Best New Play.

Race, mental illness, and 21st century British life are issues tackled with insight and wit.

Featuring Richard Edge, Christian Heath, and Kane Felsinger. Directed by Chris Baldock, founder and artistic director, Mockingbird Theatre.

Best Play – Evening Standard Awards, London Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards and Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Mockingbird Theatre is an exciting new Melbourne-based theatre company. It will bring audiences some of the best text-based contemporary and classic plays from around the world with Melbourne's brightest experienced and emerging theatrical talents.

From the team that you brought you the critically acclaimed production of The Laramie Project at Chapel off Chapel in 2012.

The play maintained a good pace and kept my interest. The standard of the production was good but the outstanding feature was the standard of the performances. All three actors were excellent. Thanks for the opportunity to enjoy this facinating and thought provoking play.

Enjoyed the production although I think it lost its way in the final act

Brilliant play. The actors portrayed the characters with real depth and passion. I am a psychologist but I believe the script made it easy for anyone to understand the story-line and issues explored.

The acting was superlative. A few twisted words but nothing unforgivable for a live performance.
As I am involved in psychology it was a fascinating plot, and I probably favored the 'wrong side'.
The play is first rate-See it before it closes!

Kase

Fantastic minimalist space that allowed the story and the characters to take centre stage. Brilliant performances by all 3 actors and I would happily see it again.

Humorous, emotional, confusing and dramatic piece, which allows you to consider whether professionals make the right decisions.

I loved this performance. The storyline provoked many ideas for me.The situation of so called professionals helping a man cope with mental health issues , when they themselves, displayed some quite disturbing mental flaws, was thought provoking and eye opening to say the least . It brought to my attention the human frailty in maintaining a balanced mind in general and how theories can be conjured up and applied in this field...but how often are they really useful and helpful ,and to whom? The actors were all superb, I was very impressed and convinced of their reality. The humorous twists mocked the human ego. Reminding us that although classed as professionals and senior consultants, people in all walks of life can still suffer from poorly driven morals and values ,steeped in self serving goals. After all its a job and source of survival and income , so there are always expectations of performance and quality to satisfy. These clashes of alliance and loyalties ,often spin the wheel of drama, inside the already dramatic issue of mental illness and surrounding issues. Interesting also that the philosophy and practise to remain autonomous , which could basically result in ; to care less ,is so often promoted to protect the practitioner and the patient from becoming too involved ,but at what cost of losing the natural innate human quality to bond , truly care and affiliate genuine connections? The ironic twist of friend turning foe, leaves a bitter taste as the audience quivers with a cold shiver at the dog eat dog mentality which , ironically, so often causes the vulnerable individual to succumb to mental instability in the first place !! Superbly written, orchestrated, and performed! Well worth seeing.
