David Scheel Musings Mostly Musical

David Scheel Musings Mostly Musical

Following his sell-out season last year, pianist-comedian David Scheel returns to the Melbourne Recital Centre for two performances with a brand new programme of fun at the expense of the classics. David Scheel offers a revealing insight into the art of the pianist-composer, because he is one of a mere handful of musicians who are keeping that art alive. “A master of the keyboard with an incredible facility for parodying musical styles.” wrote The Times, London

This year David’s focus will be on music’s greatest eccentrics, from the sexploits of Liszt, Casals, Bernstein and others, to the peccadillos of Percy (Grainger), the world’s worst opera singer, the most trusting prima donnas (and how conductors such as Beecham dealt with them) as well as a hilarious send-up of German Lieder and wonderfully inventive Theme and Variations on a Mobile Phone Ring Tone.

As always, there will also be a wealth of beautiful music and plenty of accents and voices, yet again underlining why David is compared worldwide with the likes of Victor Borge, Peter Ustinov and Robin Williams.

“I really enjoyed playing the Melbourne Recital Centre last year. All my concerts were sold out and audience responses were terrific. So I’m excited about returning this year; the programme will be entirely new, including some material I’ve written especially for the Melbourne Recital Centre concerts, which won’t be seen anywhere else.” said David Scheel.

David will also show the audience how a composer’s mind works, even going so far as composing pieces on the spot, encouraging suggestions from the audience.
