Gypsy Swing and the Hot Club of France
Gypsy Swing is so crammed with good stuff that causes the listener to sweep invisible crumbs of a baguette off the table or search in vain for telltale circles of a café au lait or a glass of wine. This band brings together some leading Australian musicians. Geoff Hughes, a familiar name to most people in the music scene plays solo guitar alongside with expatriate Russian virtuoso Igor Oskolkov as the band's violinist, while bassist Howard Cairns and guitarist Sam Lemann complete the rhythm section. These four performers are inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, who performed unique sound in Paris clubs in the last 1930s. Many a band ploughs this noble furrow, but Gypsy Swing certainly gets into the spirit of this music. The group is always warmly received by a crowd of regular followers and welcomed by the pleasantly surprised new audience.
