PAUL MCDERMOTT + 1 : BLOOD ORANGE

PAUL MCDERMOTT + 1 : BLOOD ORANGE

Daring and dangerous, and willing to dive head-first into topics most other comedians are afraid of touching, PAUL MCDERMOTT + 1 : BLOOD ORANGE offers a dark antidote to this nervous, and over-protective era. This is a show that dances madly where other shows fear to tread.

PAUL MCDERMOTT + 1 : BLOOD ORANGE Blood Orange is the third collaboration between writer/performer Paul McDermott and guitar/rock/god Glenn Moorhouse.

It’s the culmination of three years of intense study and personal observation. The previous PAUL + 1 shows have been fixated on the implications and reactions to the pandemic (see BACKSTORY below). In 2023, finally freed from the claustrophobia of COVID and its all-invasive presence PAUL + 1 felt able to explore new and powerful territory.

Blood Orange tackles three large conceptual themes facing contemporary society: The fall of Empire, the rise of women, and wanking (not necessarily in that order).

From these broad, but deceptively simple, topics PAUL + 1 has created a sonic hellscape of contemporaneous hilarity. This is a modern work for modern people that has appealed to both young and old.

One for the fans, with a mix of his somewhat offbeat DAAS original style comedy, plus a good helping of music. The first 30 minutes was a bit less amusing (despite being the "comedy" focus), harping on the royal family to build to a less than magnificent punchline. Highlight of the night was far and away the unscripted encore, with audience requests making up the bulk of the songs he performed. Including some older material that required a quick phone search to find the music for the guitarist.
Overall a solid night's entertainment. And a hint for anyone eating at the venue... we ordered a collections of entrees to share as a grazing dinner and it was a fabulous decision!

Very current. Very clever. Very funny. Great songs. Not sure why fuck is funny though.

If you vote Liberal, are a royalist, or think Bruce Lehrmann has been dealt the rough end of the stick, you will find this show offensive. Disagree with any of these concepts and you will laugh a lot.

Then there was the song about woken bleeding which will not be too everyone's taste.

Disappointing. Just didn't find him very funny. Lots of swearing (of course), but that's not so witty or clever. A very laboured half hour poking fun of the Royal family, and despite plenty to be satirical about, that wasn't funny too. Loved him years ago in the Doug Anthony Allstars, loved his more frequent angry raves, love his singing, but this time just not funny.

Fantastic as always. Biting satire in music.

A great night out! Love the venue and have enjoyed Paul McDermott's work for decades now, still do!

Great venue, Paul's singing voice is still on point, some of the jokes about womens menstrual cycles were a little past their useby and the guitarist fake laughter at jokes he's heard hundreds of times was annoying and tarnished his otherwise amazing performance. Overall had a great night.

Throughly enjoyed the set, Paul was fearless as always.

Interesting. Paul has his followers - they were more used to his humour than the newbies. Political humour was interesting. The guitarist was amazing!

Kate

Rude, crude and extremely funny. Fabulous vocals and guitar. Loved it!

The crude humour is not my cup of tea.

Paul is an amazingly talented individual. I was mesmerized throughout the show, although some material was a little ‘iffy’ for my taste. Cocaine Best was pretty good too!

Tony

Crass, tedious, boring

PD is looking so much better sans beard :). Some of his stories were a tad too long and rambling, leaving the excellent guitarist, Glenn M (aka "Cocaine Bear" :)), wandering around the stage waiting for his cue. Love the politics as always.

A great night out. Fantastic to see Paul still out there being outrageously funny.
