PACIFIC MOTHER

PACIFIC MOTHER

PACIFIC MOTHER follows champion freediver, Sachiko Fukumoto, as she navigates maternity systems for the birth of her first child and comes to the fierce realisation about the lack of choice many parents face. Sachiko, who is Japanese and married to another champion freedriver, from New Zealand, connects with ocean women from around the Pacific, Hawai’i, Tahiti, the Cook Islands and Aotearoa New Zealand to explore traditional birthing knowledge in a post-colonial Pacific.

The desire for more traditional birthing practices in Indigenous communities has been gathering pace around the world.

Not bad. Cinematography especially underwater was outstanding. Intriguing exploration of lost knowledge and practice around childbirth.

Fantastic documentary. Enjoyed how such an important topic was merged with such beautiful imagery. Very thought provoking and entertaining at the same time. Would highly recommend especially for young girls and women. An excellent way to give them the opportunity to develop a mindset that perceives natural birth as the beautiful empowering experience it has the potential to be.

Outstanding underwater photography of woman free divers and a documentation of their various attempts at getting the childbirth conditions they wanted, including women from Japan, Hawaii, Tahiti and the Cook Islands.
