DRACULA: VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER

DRACULA: VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER

Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel, DRACULA: VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London.

Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.

The film stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans) as the ship’s captain and David Dastmalchian (Dune, the Ant-Man franchise) as the Demeter’s first mate.

The film also features Jon Jon Briones (Ratched, American Horror Story), Stefan Kapicic (Deadpool films, Better Call Saul), Nikolai Nikolaeff (Stranger Things, Bruised) and Javier Botet (It films, Mama).

From DreamWorks Pictures and the producers of Zodiac and Black Swan, DRACULA: VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER is directed by Norwegian horror virtuoso André Øvredal (Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark, Trollhunter), from a script by Bragi F. Schut (Escape Room), Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters) and Zak Olkewicz (the upcoming Bullet Train), based on the chapter “The Captain’s Log” of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The book/novel itself is, obviously, not the topic of this comment; the film - is.

The film would not score well in a film/art school. It lacks imagination, misses opportunities to create suspense, plays on cheap and shallow (yet not strong enough) thrill, and so on.

It seems the film played more on the special effects than on the cinematic feel and art of storytelling, art of suspense, art of horror, art of portraying a well-known narrative in as good and high level as the readers of the novel or the attendees of the cinema deserve

It may be that it's just a Hollywood thing, that films make money just by being advertised as "epic" and having loudmouth "influencers" praise them.

Or maybe it's that those who grew up knowing of Hollywood productions only tend to think that these types of work are the highs of art. I don't know...

Perhaps what this film wanted to achieve was to cash in quickly, by being advertised as "epic" or something.

Perhaps (some or many) Hollywood blockbusters (and wannabe blockbusters) should not be seen or commented through the lenses of cinematic art, art in general, human psychology, etc. Perhaps films like this one are to be commented from a perspective of computer-generated ... something. (Even if this was the case, this film wouldn't score that high.)

Look, it's up to you - the viewer - to decide. If you love Dracula movies and don't want to miss a single one, then by all means go and watch. If you're someone who happens to want to go to a cinema and can't find anything more interesting, or tickets for all other films are sold out and you are already at the cinema and *must* see *any film* *at that particular time and place*, then sure, go see it. Enjoy popcorn and think about what to do after the film.

If you fear kissing out on something, then what can you do, it doesn't matter whether the film is good or bad if you're already anxious for potentially missing out on something.

But if you want to go and see film art, this film is not going to cut it; at least it didn't cut it for me. Unless you are a film critic, or an art student who wants to go for the purpose of studying, or you want to research what works and what doesn't, then I would say skip this film and go see something else.

It's not a big deal if you spend or lose 2-3 hours on not-so-good film; or is it? Only you know the answer or only you can discover it for yourself.

In conclusion, it seemed to me that the film did not have elementa of a good thriller or horror or suspense, and that it seemed as if it was made by people who had no idea about cinematic experience and art, of by people who deliberately disregarded it all. Perhaps it was deliberate disregard in hope it works on wider masses in the USA and on those whose art tastes have not been shaped by reading and storytelling and developing imagination
and face-to-face human interactions, but to work on those whose taste and imagination and social interaction was shaped by screens and keyboards and emojis; 0erhaps that's where the money is after all.

The film ends with a hint of possible sequels. If there is one, it may be a sign of art taste being different across geographies and generations. Sociologists rejoice, this will be something to explore!

Interesting take on Dracula. Not a fan of Dracula movies but enjoyed this

Great movie!

ATeam

Majestic visuals of a tall wooden ship, a simple plot line and predictable characters. Nothing nail-biting ... but an interesting interpretation of a supernatural creature who hunts down humans. No Romanian accents and satin capes here. This Dracula is more akin to a demonic gargoyle.

Helly

Hard to make Dracula not seen cheesy so maybe it would be better to go for a more fun feel than make it serious. Other than that, great movie. Fantastic cast, costumes and sets

Movie was better than expected.

Just a note on the event- I would consider being stricter letting in latecomers- people were still streaming in 30 minutes after the film started. It’s disrupting and does take you out of the film.

Overall a good movie, could have been more scarier.

Chilling and suspenseful adaptation of chapter 7 of Bram Stokers Dracula. The Nosferatu version only added to the macabre and already bleak setting of the old creaky ship.
After his favourite snack, so carefully packed in Transylvanian earth is found and nursed back to health by the ships doctor, the undead Count wreaks havoc and retribution upon the Demeter. With bat like stealth he stalks the crew, unleashing horrific terror.
Albeit a predictable storyline with its many previous incarnations it was still an extremely enthralling and ‘bloody’ good interpretation.
Øvredal proved to be accurate in his likening of the movie to Alien - but on a ship.

Christopher

The story was OK but needed scarier moments.

Daniel

A good take on these chapters with a Nosferatu-style take on the vampire. Easy to access the event, with the only downside being the slow service for food and drink.

Stephen

Sadly a bit of trite retelling of a Dracula story. So many plot holes it became absurd. The ship was quite impressive, but even then.

Chris

Scary good!

"Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter" delivers an eerie and atmospheric experience that harks back to classic horror cinema. With its old-timey wooden ship setting and deliberate pacing reminiscent of tension-building films like "Alien," the movie takes a unique approach to the Dracula legend. While opinions might differ, I found myself thoroughly captivated by its nostalgic charm and slow-burning terror.

The film's standout feature is undoubtedly the attention to detail in recreating the historic Demeter ship. Every creak of the wood, every gust of wind, and every flicker of the lanterns contributes to a sense of authenticity that immerses you in the bleak world of 19th-century seafaring. This commitment to setting is where my fascination with the film began. The ship itself is a character, with its dark corners and hidden compartments creating an ominous backdrop for the unfolding horror.
My partner hates horror, and she absolutely hated the movie which is probably a good sign.

Jennifer

Nice to see someone coming at the novel from a different perspective. The movie really just focuses on one chapter of the story specifically. Great diverse cast and was well acted. Very atmospheric and a gnarly representation of Dracula.

Vincent

The movie was great. I loved the novel Dracula and it is such a good idea to expand on this chapter into a full story. Very much a thriller in some parts but a really good story that fleshes out the characters. My fellow theatre attendee started whispering "How come..." to certain elements - but within a few seconds the surprises kept coming.
One of the best Dracula adaptions I've seen.

Shirl 77

A proper scary movie. Very dark with great graphics

Tony

A really suspenseful movie true to the book. 5 stars.

eggie

The music score saved the movie from repetition and boredom. There was little modulation in tone and storyline. See it large screen if you do see it.

Tony

I like this movie very much. it's one of the greatest horror movies i have ever seen.

MartyJ

Great horror thriller movie. The Dracula was pretty gruesome. Good spin on a classic. Not having read the books, thought the story was quite good. Except the ending seemed a bit too reminiscent of Dracula - Vlad the Impaler movie from a few years ago.
