The Grumpiest Boy in the World

The Grumpiest Boy in the World

Our hero, Zachary, questions his own ordinariness as he discovers an imaginary world of giants, hairy creatures, and flying things in this eye-opening opera for children.

Featuring a score from Joseph Twist, known for his stellar musical direction on the hit children’s TV show, Bluey, alongside Sidney Myer Fellowship librettist and much-loved children’s author, Finegan Kruckemeyer, this opera will be an enriching tale for children and adults alike.

Victorian Opera is thrilled to welcome the return of this family-friendly favourite in Season 2023.

NOTE: You can take up to 4 tickets for some of the sessions!

My child couldn't stop raging about how good it was. I've been to many shows, and I enjoyed it too. Lots of colour and laughs. A good time out.

I never made the event, travel delays with the trains stopped me going into Melbourne.

A wonderful introduction to Opera for children and parents alike.

First time attending an opera and was wowed! Great singing without the amplifiers. Surprising good even for adults!

Lydia

Great singing by a experienced cast. The storyline was interesting and probably more entertaining for the parents!

Great ‘tasting’ of Opera, for kids!
Short, sweet and enjoyable

Emma

It was really worthwhile and the kids enjoyed it

Yvonne

Fantastic singers and the right length of time for small children. Set and costums were vibrant nd colourful although maybe could have been a little mare engaging. Great venue and enjoyable afternoon show. Wld recommend for small children but I think 11 plus would not appreciate so much.

Not what I had expected.

My almost 7yo really enjoyed it as a first opera experience. Not too long either. Lots of fun and laughs throughout.

Great introduction to opera for the older child/teenager. Clear diction (in English), appealing story, great songs and choreography.

Great stage presence. Beautiful use of colour and the dynamics of the chorus entry via the cupboard and fridge was seamless. Enjoyed the story line, that had hints of diversity, being yourself, and equal though different. Engaging, skilled voices that were sung with the right emotion.
I enjoyed this short opera.
