A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol

We are thrilled to present this new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol transported to contemporary Melbourne amongst terrace houses, the Vic Markets, and Fed Square. It's here, Ebenezer Scrooge, the Ghosts of Christmas’ Past, Present, and Yet to Come will guide you on this reimagined tale with Melbourne-inspired characters from goths at Flinders Street Station to a Surf Life Saving Santa in this new Australian opera.

Composer Graeme Koehne (Love Burns) and writer Anna Goldsworthy (The Magic Pudding – The Opera) bring to life Dickens’ story about the importance of love, compassion, and generosity. A perfect addition to any Christmas activity list.

Fantastic modern imagining of a classic tale, all set in modern day Melbourne. Surtitles on side of stage enabled you to savour the lyrics. Great singing and performances. Basic sets.

Only a few weeks after the ‘conventional’ stage show of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with David Wenham playing Ebenezer Scrooge has been shown in Melbourne Victorian Opera presented the well-known Christmas story in a brand-new guise.
The result - a clever script, brilliant score and high-quality production presented by an energetic orchestra accompanying equally joyful as enjoyable singers with great voices and stage presence. Many references to the widely known story were pepped up by the introduction of the character of Scrooge’s niece who became a main positive/optimistic counterweight in the relationship between the misanthropic business man and his social environment.
The blend of an easily transformable set, sensible lighting design and well executed choreography moving around a considerable number of choir members created a constantly intriguing atmosphere on stage that captivated the audience.
What makes this production extra special is the fact it is a ‘real’ opera with all the characteristics and attributes you expect from a musical work that is more than a ‘musical’.
So, not only lovers of Charles Dickens, fans of fitting entertainment for the festive season but every opera lover should see it – Opera Victoria’s A Christmas Carol is surely more than just a Christmassy indulgence.

My first ever opera!! Thoroughly enjoyed the Australian adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol.' A +++ bonus was the audio description on the two screens, as my hearing is not the best.
