Sweet Road

Sweet Road

Written by Debra Oswald Directed by Erik Strauts 8-10 & 14-17 September 2022

Cast: Jackson Barnard, Amelia Brzezicki, Cheryl Douglas, Gabi Douglas, Ashleigh Merriel, Josh van’t Padje, Sailor Tyler, Malcolm Walton and Damien White.

Jo, ferrying a cake for her husband Brent’s fortieth birthday, stops at the traffic lights only to see him, in his vehicle puckering lips with the young office girl.

Full of vitality and good humour, this is a play which explores the aspirations and idiosyncrasies of seemingly ordinary people as they cross the vast and far from ordinary Australian landscape.

Warning: STRONG LANGUAGE

A hilarious, cracker Aussie tale

The journeys along Sweet Road left one with much to ponder for days whilst reflecting about our own differences and similarities on our own journeys.

Lovely little venue, a genuinely Australian story told by talented actors. We enjoyed ourselves.

An ambitious production, some of which worked very well, but at times dramatic cohesion was undermined by timing that was just slightly out... The dialogue was sometimes hard to interpret, and I felt that catching some of the missed bits might have helped the enjoyment of the audience. I noticed that a few people left at Interval, never to return. There was some very good and engaging acting, but the young male character seemed more psychologically scattered than charmingly impulsive. I thought he was over-acting on the night I was there- he gave a pretty good impression of a chipmunk on Benzedrine.

Very relevant human issues of loss, grief and love.

This was a real Australian play set in the outback which was well directed and acted by the cast. The characters were very relatable and as the play progressed you were taking on their journeys wondering if their outback tracks would cross
