Girl From North Country

Girl From North Country

A universal story about family and love, this award-winning Broadway musical features over 20 songs from legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan including Hurricane, Like a Rolling Stone, To Make You Feel My Love and Forever Young, all beautifully reimagined as you’ve never heard them before.

Travel back to 1934 Minnesota, where a group of wanderers cross paths at a guesthouse. Standing at a turning point in their lives, they realise nothing is what it seems, but as they search for a future, and hide from the past, they find themselves facing unspoken truths about the present.

Written and directed by multi award-winner Conor McPherson (The Weir, The Seafarer), and starring stage and screen icon Lisa McCune, Peter Kowitz (Janet King) and Helpmann Award winners Peter Carroll, Helen Dallimore and Greg Stone.

Hailed “A TRIUMPH!” (Washington Post), this uplifting story of American life promises to be the theatrical event of 2022.

When it reached its potential it was magnificent but some of the songs were a little pedestrian.

We really enjoyed the show and the collection of Dylan songs skillfully woven throughout, and beautifully performed by the cast. Thoughtful, insightful social themes still very relevant today, plenty to reflect on.

Beautiful score!

Outstanding acting and singing. I particularly liked the way set designs were projected onto the background. Great music from Bob Dylan. The story set in 1934 Minnesota was great but very dark.

Wow, could these guys sing!

Colin

The acting and singing were great, delivered clearly, and with conviction, by well cast performers.
The show dealt with difficult subjects with humour, energy and feeling.
The set and lighting framed the scenes beautifully, with no distractions.
I was entertained whilst gaining an insight into the the lives of people living in an era I had a limited knowledge of.

Belinda

Amazing talented performers, however I felt as though the story was lacking.

The show portrayed how hard life was post the Depression in small town USA. Though not an uplifting show you were entertained by an exceptional cast whose acting was engaging and whose voices sang the variety of songs including Bob Dylan's from the heart and with gusto. The singing standard was world class and this was a significant highlight of the show. Lisa McCune was exceptional in her role as Elizabeth and her co-star who played Nick was excellent too. Their was some humour too and difficult issues like pregnant single black mothers to be and mental and physical disabilities were aired as part of the story line. The cast were energetic and certainly played their roles well. It is not an upbeat show but the combination of a difficult story to tell and the wonderful arrangements of the songs and the music made it worthwhile to see. There was humour and laughter and love intertwined with despair and moments of joyful distraction from the challenging storyline. If any thing you were left in awe of the versatility of the cast in all the roles they played both musically and dramatically. It did not have a happy ending but you were left knowing that though it has been difficult during Covid for all of us in comparison to those living in the post depression era, life now is not too bad. It was so heart warming a number of older actors in the cast who did a to see a brilliant job Go and see it for the incredible cast and acting.

It took a while to warm to this show, but in the end I loved it. Lisa McCune, in particular, was a standout performance.

Slow first half, dynamic second half

Music and singers' harmonies were enjoyable but play was very disjointed. Lacked flow for me. Must admit not at all what I expected but didn't find it 'engaging'.

Great to get back to live acting complimented by music and songs that I could understand. We left the theatre discussing social issues that still plague us now that happened back in the 30-40’s.
