Girl From The North Country

Girl From The North Country

After sold out seasons on the West End and Broadway, Girl From The North Country has taken the theatrical world by storm and is now one of the most critically acclaimed productions of the 21st Century.

An uplifting story of American life in 1934 Minnesota, a group of wanderers cross paths at a guesthouse. Standing at a turning point in their lives, they realise nothing is what it seems, but as they search for a future, and hide from the past, they find themselves facing unspoken truths about the present.

Written and directed by multi award-winner Conor McPherson (The Weir, The Seafarer) and featuring the songs of Bob Dylan, Girl From The North Country stars Lisa McCune, Helen Dallimore, Zahra Newman, Terence Crawford and Peter Carroll.

Somewhat melodramatic and uneven. Didn't really do justice to Dylan's great lyrics, which are his main skills not the music itself. So the play could have been more poetic.

As per other comment by a member here - not what I expected. Totally loved the dancing and singing and the actors were exceptional however the storyline was quite ordinary and confusing at times.

Not what I expected. More play than musical, performers were good.

Encore with Pamela: We had an issue with not being able to hear the dialogue clearly throughout, which impacts understanding of the narrative and character relationships which is all critical to a full appreciation of the show and emotional connection with their lives and situations which were many. Apart from that the energy, the sad, happy, dramatic and quiet scenes were all wonderful to observe in particular the singing and dancing, the energy attesting to love, life and hope in the face of the desperate plunge into the unknown. The disparate characters being fully human interacting at this cross roads in a harsh bleak period of life, finding joy and empowerment in star crossed connections however brief going forward towards their destinies and various destinations. Bob Dylan's poetic songs are resonant and relevant in times past, today and possibly forever..

Entertaining, more story context would be beneficial though.

Not the light musical I expected. It had more of a drama storyline rendition with great music. Bit confusing at times.

Interesting show. More a drama/musical than a musical. Different arrangements of Dylan songs were well done with some great harmonies. Sometimes a little confusing as the plot progressed. The small orchestra worked well and it was great to see them amongst the action at times along with other cast members playing along on various occasions. If you want a change from the usual musical this one's for you

Donnie

Great music, moving story, wonderful performances.

Great show

Amy

The music was great and fantastic singing all round. The plot wasn't as great though and was a bit confusing at times, particularly in the first half. But all in all I would recommend it, especially for Lisa McCune's performance.

Americana period musicals takes over Exhibition Street with Girl from the North Country and Hamilton across the road. They both deal with grass roots issues of their times as do Bob Dylan's songs and his lyrics suit perfectly the themes of this narrative and experiences of the characters. Sometimes I found the words difficult to hear clearly and understand which I put down to the American accents that the characters spoke with. The songs not being sung by Dylan took on new meanings when heard in a different style voice and context outside of the master's concert ouvre on stage, on disc or on Utube. The performers were well cast while Lisa McCune was a standout with her special energy and star power shining through. I would think she knows she has to give more and she has that extra charge that flows out to the audience. We thoroughly enjoyed the Girl from the North Country and could happily see it again.

Winter

Amazing! No happy end though. The musicians and the vocalists were excellent. Loved every moment.

Michelle

Fantastic show!

I really enjoyed this- It falls inbetween your traditional "musical" and a "drama", but for me, the format worked well. Yes I am a fan of Dylan and his songs, and the cast and musicians did not disappoint. In fact both the musicians and the vocalists were excellent. Some dark themes were explored, but fitted in well with Dylan's lyrics- I was very satisfied with the whole experience.

gumwah

A great show, excellent selection of Dylan songs with a mix from his early years to quite recently and quite a few from his great albums though less well known from 78 to 84. A good storyline too.

Adi

An interesting choice of storyline that was a little confusing in places. Beautiful voices with soulful performances although some songs seemed rather out of place. It was enjoyable but if you are looking for a feel good musical, this one might not be for you. I would have loved more of the a capella style like the final song. That was beautiful.

Big Al

Highly recommend, Lisa mccune a great performance

Set in the Depression, this is a story, or rather, stories of down and out people, struggling with their lives. Rather than a joyous musical you could class it more as a drama musical. The singing was excellent and Lisa McCune was outstanding, as Elizabeth Laine struggling with dementia. In short I couldn’t fault the singing the dancing or the acting, but there seemed to be a certain energy lacking from the show; the oomph was missing. Maybe it was the subject matter or the fact that the show tries to be both heavy drama and a musical at the same time. Still, it kept your interest, the sets were well used, and it was great to be treated by basically an anthology of Bob Dylan’s songs, used to good effect. Worth seeing.

AndrewBarneveld

The vocals and music were delivered powerfully by the cast and the production was entertaining even whilst it delved into some very difficult themes from past history in the United States. Thanks ‘It’s on the house’ for the opportunity to see shows like this at such a reasonable price.

Talented team doing justice to Dylan.
