BOObook Theatre presents The Role Model, a comedy-drama theatre production by award-winning Australian playwright, Bruce Hoogendoorn, directed by Sue Lindsay, about the fall from grace of a sports hero – and his attempts at media redemption. The Role Model explores the very topical issue of sports heroes, the “role model” pedestal they’re often placed upon, and the dramatic fallout that occurs when a sports hero misbehaves under the glaring eye of their adoring public. The Role Model, former Olympic swimmer, Scott Martin, played by James Doolan (star of Australian feature film, Tin God, released in 2009) has ruined his lucrative post-Olympic career in motivational speaking after a private indiscretion goes public. Scott’s devious manager, Wanda, played by Denise Kuchmar (a thirty-five year veteran of live theatre and radio, and a regular at Melbourne’s International Comedy Festival) devises a manipulative scheme to regain Scott’s reputation. Her plan: to get Scott to mentor a teenage boy suffering depression then “leak” it to the press.
Ideal for all ages, and all types of people (sports-buff or otherwise), audiences will walk away from The Role Model feeling good, and just a bit wiser.
