Samsara (Asia TOPA)
Created and performed by international dance artists Aakash Odedra (UK/India) and Hu Shenyuan (China), Samsara merges mythological storytelling with personal experience.
Described by The Guardian as “a beautiful performer”, Odedra has attracted global attention for both his virtuoso Kathak performances and his contemporary choreography. One of the most outstanding dancers of his generation in China, Shenyuan was the standout performer in Yang Liping’s Under Siege (Melbourne Festival 2017).
Inspired by the historical events recounted in the 16th century Chinese classic Journey to the West, Samsara is an unprecedented expression of cultural exchange through the language of dance, drawing upon the diverse disciplines of ballet, contemporary dance, Chinese folk dance and the classical Indian dance form Kathak.
Featuring the live music of Nicki Wells, immerse yourself in the energy and skill of these two extraordinary soloists, in this epic world premiere.

It was truly beautiful... both the dancing and the production design. The use of sand and lighting was spectacular. I would recommend understanding the context before going in.

energetic dance show
Had there been another performance, I would have rushed to get more tickets. It was a mesmerising, incredible one hour journey. Aakash, Hu and their musical ensemble were riveting to watch and hear. Certainly the best of what I have seen from the Asia/Topia festival. Quite an unforgettable experience.

A magical event full of beautiful singing , drumming, Mongolian throat singing , martial arts dancing and creative use of sand.
Wish it was longer
We loved this performance, both dancers, Aakash and Hu were beautiful to watch. The drumming throughout was so powerful and with Nicki singing and the guy supporting her on instruments took it to another level. This has to be one of the best performances we've seen from On The House. Highly recommended.
