The Mysterious Lai Teck (Asia TOPA)

The Mysterious Lai Teck (Asia TOPA)

The most astonishing thing about this byzantine thriller of spies, traitors, betrayal and deceit is that it actually happened.

To the majority of the world, Lai Teck was the leader of the Malayan Communist Party from 1939 to 1947. His other life as a triple agent, working for the French, British and Japanese secret police, only came to light after his death in 1947... and that's if you believe he really died.

Acclaimed Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen guides you into Lai Teck's labyrinthine underworld in this evocative and haunting tale of lies and counter-lies, espionage and treachery. Richly theatrical, it is a snapshot of the shifting face of Southeast Asia in the Age of Treason.

Fascinating story and way it was done.

It was just an audio file being played the whole time. There was no indication that it would be in Chinese.

Bianca M

Interesting with good special effects.

Lastolita

i loved the weirdly cinematic excursion of Malaysian history and the opportunity to reflect on history, truth and morality. it reminded me of David Lynch.

Arindam

It was an engaging form of storytelling

Cindy

I learnt something new but didn't really enjoy the process/performance.

Nerida

I disagree with Gilon, it was very engaging and surprising, particularly not having any knowledge about "Lai Teck". It also provided us with an opportunity to chat with a complete stranger who emigrated from Malaysia 50+ years ago, who also provided personal anecdotes about that time, and commentary about current Malaysian politics.

Can’t say I enjoyed the storyline and how it was narrated but the visual effects were “interesting” although possibly out of focus?

Fascinating, immersive and finally surprising theatre. As a Mandarin spoken work it didn’t seem to suffer lack of impact with the English sur titles

Good special effects, but an hour of loud speech in a foreign language, with sub-titles, in a dark space, with bright lights and a motionless, seated figure, often behind layers of sheer curtains, is exhausting.

Gilon

Didn't seem to be a great way to tell the story. Not overly engaging.
