We very much enjoyed the concert by the UNSW Symphony Orchestra last Friday night.
Beginning with the soaring and triumphant Finlandia by Sibelius, then Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet, a popular favourite with its haunting second movement one of the most memorable pieces of classical music.
After interval we returned to a totally different mood, a piece written only in 2014 by Richard Blackford and being performed for just the second time in Australia. It is in five movements, each set over a soundscape of animal calls from Borneo, the Amazon, Zimbabwe, America and elsewhere. It was intriguing and unexpectedly beautiful.
I will certainly seek out this orchestra again.

Really enjoyed all performances but especially Finlandia (Jean Sibelius). Blackford's Great Animal Orchestra was interesting, clever and engaging.

Wonderful evening with excellent choice in composition. Future stars in the making with a tight sound. Standout clarinet solo from Thomas Azoury.
