The Legend of Queen Kong Episode II

The Legend of Queen Kong Episode II

Sarah Ward, the artist behind Yana Alana, brings you her latest stage creation, QUEEN KONG, in a space-fiction rock-concert of meteoric proportions.

With complete disregard for conventional chronology, the narrative starts in the middle. Prodigal protagonist Queen Kong – part rock, part ape, immortal being – has been imprisoned by humans for being too large. Embarking on a journey of transmutations and bi-curious encounters through time and space, Queen Kong discovers what it means to be human.

This inclusive new work features a powerhouse performance by the subversive Sarah Ward, backed by all-queer, all-gender-diverse rock band The HOMOsapiens, led by Bec Matthews. Joining them on screen is deaf performer Asphyxia with live Auslan interpreting by Kirri Dangerfield. Queen Kong is directed by Susie Dee with lighting by Paul Lim, while mind blowing visual projections come courtesy of style icon Will Huxley and animator Finn Scholes.

The Legend of Queen Kong Episode II: Queen Kong in Outer Space will be performed in English and Auslan with subtitles, visual imagery and pumping bass vibrations from a rocking live soundtrack.

The relaxed performance at 4pm on Saturday 19 January welcomes you to make noise, move about and experience this rock-concert your way!

Trying to be "art" more than a good show at times. Apologising for a nonsensical story doesn't actually excuse this fault. Could have been a great show with more attention paid to writing. Still, a lot of musical talent on display carries the work, making it a better outing than most Fringe shows.

I really wanted to enjoy this, and there are some clever and funny moments, and the production and the music and band were very good... But... I am sick of the need to toxically introduce unnecessary cheap partisan political point scoring into every aspect of LGBTQ culture as if to say that if I didn't laugh at the political "humour" that really I had wasted my time on a production which was really only designed for the "right type of crowd". I appreciate that this production only existed through knowing the right mates on a particular side of politics, but the gay community I used to know was all embracing and able to take the piss out of everyone. If LGBTQ culture can't do that then it simply has been hijacked for partisan propoganda. And that isn't funny.

Clever and irreverent. Great music and singing. The show challenges many 'normal' things we sadly take for granted. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Demon

Tight band, great sound, visuals and lighting. Magnificent voice of Sarah Ward spellbinding.
