Synopsis:
Julian Schnabel’s ravishingly tactile and luminous new film takes a fresh look at the last days of Vincent van Gogh, and in the process revivifies our sense of the artist as a living, feeling human being. Schnabel; his co-writers Jean-Claude Carrière and Louise Kugelberg, also the film’s editor; and cinematographer Benoît Delhomme strip everything down to essentials, fusing the sensual, the emotional, and the spiritual. And the pulsing heart of At Eternity’s Gate is Willem Dafoe’s shattering performance: his Vincent is at once lucid, mad, brilliant, helpless, defeated, and, finally, triumphant. Venue was brilliant but movie was disappointing
Wonderful depiction of the light in Van Gogh's work. Not a movie for everyone, as the pace is slow, but fascinating nonetheless, with some excellent acting from Dafoe.
Visually stunning
Well acted movie the shots in the country and the story was entertaining
'At Eternity's Gate' reveals Vincent Van Gogh's consuming passion for painting. We are shown his perceptions and interpretations on light & eternity. While Willem Dafoe's performance is captivating, the depicted mood & constant piano music is melancholic and depressive. One feels that the cameraman is continuously walking beside the actors, adding to the slow, paced storyline. An enlightening view of Van Gogh's love of art and his personal difficulties in an adverse community.
Movie was a bit dull/slow for me but venue was great
