The Legend of Dunhuang (On the House Review)

An experience like no other
Produced by China Arts and Entertainment Group and performed by Gansu Dance Troupe, The Legend of Dunhuang’s is spectacular show that left the audience mesmerised during its limited engagement in Sydney on October 5 and 6 at the ICC.

The Legend of Dunhuang tells the tale of painter Shengbi (performed by Wang Zihan) and his daughter Yingniang (performance by Kang Qi) as their lives intertwine with Yunus, a wealthy Persian whom they save from the desert. Yunus finds himself protecting Yingniang at several times in the story including when she is trapped in a dance troupe and again when she travels to Persia for protection. Throughout the production the love between father and daughter remains The Legend of Dunhuang’s most powerful theme.

The production has been created beautifully, and the dances are truly remarkable to watch. A particular highlight was the ribbon dance performed by Yingniang during Act 4. With the music turned down slightly, the sound of the ribbon hitting the ground created an intimate experience for the audience, many of whom have likely never seen this skill performed live.
Likewise, the music is enjoyable and provides clear matches to the viewings experienced. This was particularly important given that there is no narration during dances.

The entire set design was phenomenal and clearly well considered as all components must be able to travel across the world with the travelling troupe. Particularly unique was the use of the large screen behind the stage which projected images and short videos relevant to the setting for each scene. The use of such technology is still relatively new to Sydney’s arts scene and was an enjoyable addition.

Earning special mention is the stunning costumes adorned by every individual in the show. From the two-piece worn by Yingniang for her dance in Act 3 to the finale costumes, every single item was gorgeous and vibrantly coloured.

In all, The Legend of Dunhuang offers a phenomenal opportunity to experience Chinese cultural entertainment. I am greatly looking forward to the next China Arts and Entertainment Group import; The Lake Honghu in Concert which will be playing on 4th November at the Sydney Opera House. If The Legend of Dunhuang is anything to go off, this is no doubt set to be another fantastic show.
