Acclaimed theatre, film and television actor Colin Friels stars in British playwright Justin Butcher’s extraordinary one-man play, Scaramouche Jones.
First performed by celebrated English actor, the late Pete Postlethwaite in 2001, Scaramouche Jones broke box-office records in the UK and toured internationally. This brand new production features Colin Friels in his first solo theatre performance, and reunites him with influential film and theatre director Alkinos Tsilimidos.
Butcher’s poignant tale begins as an ancient clown stops to reflect on the extraordinary fortunes of his life; orphaned on the wharfs in Trinidad, apprenticed to a travelling snake charmer and drawn into tragic circumstances as a gravedigger at Auschwitz. In turn, Scaramouche Jones explores some of the darkest episodes of the 20th Century, albeit laced with the consummate wit of the circus clown.
In this challenging role, performed in Arts Centre Melbourne’s most intimate theatre, Colin Friels strips away the comic masks of Scaramouche Jones in an unmissable performance.

It didn't catch me or inspire me. The audience on the night I went gave a standing ovation and my friend liked it, but it felt a bit flat to me.
I loved this performance, and made sure I wrote a great review on Facebook to get the news out. I hope that many people attended this excellent performance.
The Script by Butcher is great, Though felt it wasn't delivered well, I found it difficult to hear the words from Friels and he lacked the emotion needed to fulfill the part. Film acting and directing adapting for the theatre stage.... needs work. Most of the audience did give a standing ovation, though I noticed others walked out early. Glad I didn't pay full price for this one.

Pretty good without being the amazing and memorable experience of seeing the writer Justin Butcher perform the role on his Oz tour of some years ago. It was a little difficult to hear the monologue from near the back of the venue, especially near the start. Hopefully future crowds will fare better.

Friels gives it everything, he shows so much emotion and skill in his craft. The performance is enhanced by the brilliant lighting and outstanding set which Friels uses to show trigger moments in his use of movement and feeling. A must see performance.

This is a unique story of life and death, of happiness and unimaginable suffering, of long lost worlds that are beautifully created out of words.
An ancient clown who slowly reveals himself layer by layer, mask by mask, finally wiping off his make-up...

This was the most engaging 80 minutes of theater i have seen since the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime, Colin was totally immersive with his character portrayal of Scaramouch Jones, with his use of language and accents made you believe he was a 100 year old clown telling the amazing tale of his life.
What an amazing performance by an incredibly talented actor. Outstanding and brilliantly executed. A master of his craft and a far cry from Monkey Grip.
