Constellations

Romance and science collide in the multiverse

In Nick Payne’s award winning* play Constellations the infinite multiverse is distilled into a tender lover story between quantum-physicist Marianne and beekeeper Roland. Directed by Victor Kalka and playing at the Chippen Street Theatre, the production stars Alice Birbara and Henry Hulme.

"Every decision you’ve ever and never made exists in an unimaginably vast ensemble of parallel universes." The odds of Roland and Marianne meeting are slim, but they do, and an infinitude of what-might-have-been follows. Once their paths cross, all the possibilities of a life shared together flicker across the stage.

Constellations is the fifth collaboration between Kalka and Birbara, named a “formidable creative pairing” by Sydney Arts Guide, and is also Birbara’s last performance in Sydney before commencing a Masters of Acting at the Bristol Old Vic.

Director Victor Kalka: “Constellations is a wonderful piece for two actors with excellent chemistry, and Alice and Henry have that. They trust each other, and together take the audience on a journey.”

“Humans love finding meanings and patterns in nature – constellations themselves are just a random cluster of stars that we’ve assigned a meaning – and it’s exciting for audiences to join the dots in the play and create the story with the actors.”
