MLIVE presents THE SEASON

MLIVE presents THE SEASON

“It is full of happy vulgarity, good gags and storytelling and, above all, a cast of crazy characters whom you cannot help liking".
– THE AUSTRALIAN

“…you'll fall in love with the characters – an Indigenous family powerfully shaped, but not defined, by heritage and culture – THE AGE

"It’s exactly the kind of play that should be programmed: it tells a story of the Aboriginal Tasmanian experience that rarely, if ever, has made its way over to the mainland via art. Touring this play ensures that one of theatre’s most enduring functions – to share experiences as a true cultural exchange – remains a vital part of our local festival culture". - TIMEOUT MELBOURNE

Families are like seasons: you don't get to pick them, and when they show up you best be ready!

All theatre and comedy fans are invited to the highly anticipated and award-winning production, The Season at Monash University’s Alexander Theatre from Friday 3rd and Saturday, 4 August. The production returns to Melbourne to kick off its Australian tour following a hugely successful staging at the Sydney Festival and Melbourne Festival in 2017. At this year’s Green Room Awards, The Season won Best Production, Best Direction, and Best New Writing.

The Season is a warm and laugh-out-loud comedy about an Aboriginal family who come together each year for the traditional Mutton Bird harvest on Tasmania’s Dog Island. Somewhere between mainland Australia and its southern-most mate, Tassie, lies Dog Island. For six weeks every year that's where you'll find the Duncans, a mob as funny as they are unforgettable.

They come back to roost for mutton-bird season and have done for as long as anyone can remember. Amid the threat of snakes and Pop’s explosive temper, the family reunites with a country and culture still very much alive. But their long memories and smart-arse streak mean it’s not just the birds sticking their beaks where they’re not welcome. Old secrets are dug from their burrows and fledgling rivalries begin to take flight - it might all fall apart if it wasn't for the fierce love that holds this bunch together.

Nathan Maynard has crafted a deadly funny portrait of a singular corner of our world. Directed by Isaac Drandic and featuring a stellar cast including Trevor Jamieson, Matthew Cooper and Lisa Maza, this national tour of the original acclaimed production is raucous and rowdy celebration of tradition and the bonds that unite us.

Each and every one are great actors exceling in their roll. Depicts the culture very well. Needs a little more imagination in the props department to jazz it up a bit.

Good story, well played. Lots of swearing though.

Enjoyable theatre. We see too little of Indigenous Australia’s story on the stage.

Diverse range of family characters each with their own issues. Captivating performance maintained throughout with often bawdy humour.

Great to see history being rewritten. Powerful, funny, and moving.

Look, I actually quite enjoyed this. It has some good acting, with great character potential if it is given some better and tighter direction
