The Lonesome West

The Lonesome West

Lab Theatre In association with Aleksandar Vass & Vass Productions present

The Lonesome West by Martin McDonagh

Following the death of their father, brothers Coleman (Dean Gunera) and Valene (Sean Kitcher) are left to live together, where they consistently argue and fight over the most mundane and innocent of topics.

Father Welsh (Matthew Elliott), the good-hearted but deeply troubled priest, frantically attempts to reconcile the brothers before their lives spiral out of control, but his advice goes unheard.

Girleen (Renee Kypriotis), the beautiful young school girl, provides the hope for a brighter future… if only the men were ready to find compassion for each other. ‘The Lonesome West’ is a darkly irreverent black comedy by Martin McDonagh

Excellent melodrama rich in Irish sensibilities and very funny in the darkest way

great performance

The overacted overaccentuated Irish accent was almost inarticulate at some points so I tuned out. It was really offputting for me and I missed a lot of the conversation therefore lost interest early in the piece unfortunately.

Clever, dark and funny. I struggled with the heavy accents intially, but the ear adjusts. My favourite part was a duel over the dinner table that had me wondering how low they'd go. Sharp and clever black comedy.

we found it hard to understand Irish accent, which we were not expecting. But the show was good, as little we understood, play was compensated by the actors play.

This is a very very dark cimedy. Some lines were lost on me because of the heavy Irish accent. It is well acted but the story is quite harrowing in parts.

took a awhile for the ear to adjust to the Irish accents, but the black humour was pretty pervasive. Actors did well. A number of layers to this story.

janebrownrigg

Well performed but I struggled with the Irish accents.

Ireneo

Intense story with compelling performances and splashes of humour. The accents did cause me to miss some of the dialogue.

I loved the play but unfortunately struggled with following the quickly spoken Irish accented dialogue. I know I missed catching some very clever writing. Very impressive otherwise.

Demon

Once the ears become accustomed to the Irish accents the continuous feed of dark humour is beguiling. The darkest of plots is made humorous, the well acted sad characters understood and religious hypocrisy exposed. Many levels to this excellent play. Recommended.

taly

Very good acting. Interesting script.

I rather liked the play, and my husband loved it. It's funny, it's sad, sometimes it's very much on the edge.

It is a love-hate story of two brothers who can't stand each other but can't live without each other, story of abuse and addiction. Every character here is sad and miserable, and the story, should it happen in real life, would horrify anyone - whereas in the play it seemed almost hilarious.
