The Manganiyar Seduction

The Manganiyar Seduction

The Manganiyar Seduction is a visually and musically stunning masterpiece, where 40 musicians from three generations of Manganiyars perform in a 36-windowed ‘jewel box’, with the songs slowly building to giddying heights.

Celebrating the music of the Manganiyars, a caste of desert musicians from the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, The Manganiyar Seduction will be performed twice in the State Theatre on March 6 and 7, 2018.

Described as “rapturous... jaw-dropping... buoyant... compelling...tranquil...” by The New York Times, the show has received long-held standing ovations all over the world, from Salzburg and Vienna, to New York, Singapore, Washington, Paris and Hong Kong.

The Manganiyar Seduction was first created to open the Delhi Film Festival in 2006. Its rousing success, incredible originality and intense musicality has seen it tour the globe ever since. The project allowed Director Roysten Abel to collaborate with the Manganiyar musicians for the first time, with the concept a dazzling union between the Manganiyar's music and the visual seduction of Amsterdam's red light district. The set is a combination of the Hawa Mahal Palace in Jaipur and the red light district, and is often compared to a jewel box.

This dramatic and astounding performance is not to be missed as these extraordinary Manganiyar musicians transport audiences to another world.

Entertaining and wholly unique fusion of Rajasthani folk musical culture with some inpired western performance characteristics. The set is inspired by the wonderful Hawa mahal (Hawa palace) in Rajasthan (north west India, bordering Pakistan) and the red light district of Amsterdam (hence the 'seduction'). The show is driven by the Rajasthani orchestral and vocal traditions (at times a little overpowering, but always with a warm and fuzzy culutural vibe). Having researched these guys after the show, I understood how valuable the performance is as a cutlural experience. Very interesting show, and wonderful traditonal instruments, delivered by guys with heaps of heart - a manganiyar 'wall of sound' that Phil Spector would be proud of! I enjoyed it very much.

Brava! So grateful to On The House for offering these tickets, one of the most sublime, soul-stirring performances I've ever seen. Perfection.

What a privilege to attend such a performance. It didn't matter that we didn't understand the language. The emotion in the voices the facial expressions and the arm gestures said it all. Wonderful singers and highly accomplished musicians. And the conductor was awesome- dancing his way nimbly across the stage, interacting with and coaxing the musicians and then getting the audience to clap out different rhythms. Thank you, It's on the House for such a unique and memorable cultural experience.

40 Indian musicians performed in a 36-windowed ‘jewel box’ set. They were from three generations of Manganiyars, a caste of desert musicians from the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. After a meditative start it soon became a blast of music from a veritable wall of male musicians as each opened a curtain and joined in. We were pleased to see that two played the sarangi, an instrument that isn't often seen abroad.

OJ

Wonderful -thanks!

LesleyAnne

It's nice to have something different. Worthwhile via itsonthehouse.
Personally I found the start boring since they slowly light up the boxes to create a build up. Obviously I don't understand the language, so all the singing at the start didn't do much for me. Though towards the end when it's mainly instruments and most of the boxes are lit up, it's far more captivating.

Marieshe

Delightful performance, i felt immersed in the music and performance.

georgieboy

Mesmerising, magestic, magnificent Manganiyars

Rsj

Absolutely outstanding. The best show I have attended in am extremely long time.

Pablo Barton

Walking in to the theatre a set of 32 boxes with individual stage curtains glow. The show began in complete darkness to be illuminated by a soloist. The soloist is the key feature for this orchestra, as they end up accompanying majority of the individuals who appeared from behind each curtain.

15 solid vocalists were accompanied by a number of traditional and modern instruments. The conductor was also a key aspect, not only for keeping the orchestra together but for his instrumental inclusion and visual silhouette movements.

The lighting was simple but very effective. I applaud the quick changes that were required in some segments of the music. The sound on the other hand I found out of balance. The heavy percussion seemed to drown out the woodwind and string instruments and I loss connection a few times, where I couldn’t find a main theme or melody to follow.

Overall this performance (only 90min long) deserved the standing ovation it received with the pure enjoyment of music from another culture being taught and putting the audience in awe. The piece the Manganiyar Seduction played for their encore (a hymn) left many men in tears of joy.

Molls

Very talented performers, thoroughly entertaining.
