"Last night's Forest Collective concert at St Stephens Church in Richmond was a bold journey exploring the musician's relationship with their instrument.
A collection of pieces from way outside the box, had the audience entranced as flautist Kim Tan shimmied and postured, telling a musical story evocative of the finest Balinese traditions. We were treated to double bowed cellist Nikki Edgar, knitting threads of rhythm and sound into a visual and auditory tapestry. Stamping and yawping trombonist Trea Hindley, tickled our funny bones with her page turning flair, and all performers delighted with their investigation of the extraordinary.
The only criticism, a viewer might level at the evening is that so many esoteric musical explorations lead the tone of the performances to drift off into the ether. However, this was remedied nicely with a grand finale involving all soloists. Conductor Evan Lawson, lead a beautifully nuanced, melodic "Lenzzauber from Op 4.", whose composer, Franz Schreker, had conceived of it in a concentration camp. Vocalist Kate Bright soared, a fitting ending for a suite that delighted in pushing the boundaries of musical conventionality."
