Masterclass

Masterclass

The original diva. The greatest dramatic soprano of her generation. After a sensational career that saw her become the undisputed star of the world’s greatest Opera Houses including, La Scala and The Metropolitan Opera in New York, Maria Callas accepts an invitation to conduct a series of master classes to a select group of young vocal students at the Juilliard School in New York.

In Terrence McNally’s extraordinary theatrical tribute, Callas takes centre-stage one more time, as she passes on to her students, and to us, the experiences and lessons of a lifetime. We witness her passion and commitment and realise the uniqueness of her great talent as she cajoles and lectures her students, delivering wisdom and insults in true diva style.

Amanda Muggleton is one of Australia’s greatest and most loved actresses. In a career that spans over 4 decades, Amanda has more than 50 theatre, film and television credits to her name including her long running role of Chrissie Latham in Prisoner, and on stage, starring in Shirley Valentine, Hello Dolly!, Entertaining Mr Sloane, HMS Pinafore, Calendar Girls, Blood Brothers, Steaming and The Seagull.

We enjoyed Master Class very much. The actors were superb, with Amanda Muggleton owning the stage from the moment she walked in. We loved the music and the singing by all three young performers and the fantastic Mestro Dobbs. Loved it!

What an amazing multi-layered gift! Thank you again, It's on the House and its sponsors. This play comprised so many changes in pace and mood and styles of story-telling. It was a Master Class for living, suffering, experiencing and expressing emotions. It was a Master Class in which Maria Callas' character - sometimes petulant, sometimes contradictory, sometimes harsh, sometimes tragic, sometimes triumphant and often warm, stylish and witty- imparts the secrets of her success and her life with wisdom and attitude! I was so enthralled by the actual experience that I didn't notice the projections on the back wall of the theatre- which served as a set and added to the drama, atmosphere and credibility of aspects of Maria Callas' story- until half-way through the first act.

You don't have to be an opera buff to get a lot out of this intimate and interactive piece. Amanda Muggleton and her supporting cast, stellar in their own right, received a standing ovation from all of us in the audience last night. This beautiful performance comes tied up with a very special unexpected ribbon at the end. So if you enjoy theatre, fine acting, divine music and wonderful story- telling- I highly recommend Master Class.
