Greek Film Festival | JOE CINQUE'S CONSOLATION

“A focused examination of a troubling human tragedy, breathing new life into the departed by exploring the unknowable.” The Reel Bits

An inevitable and frustratingly avoidable tragedy unfolds onscreen in filmmaker Sotiris Dounoukos’ debut feature, which comes based on Helen Garner’s book about the true crime story that shocked the nation.

October 1997: Law student Anu Singh killed her boyfriend Joe Cinque by spiking his coffee with Rohypnol and injecting him with a lethal dose of heroin. Unbelievably, she did so by hosting a dinner party at which all the guests, except Joe, knew of her ‘suicide pact’ and did nothing to stop her.

Exploring the relationship between affable engineering student Joe (Jerome Meyer) and mentally troubled Anu (Maggie Naouri), Joe Cinque’s Consolation is a chilling trip into the dark recesses of a one-sided relationship taken to tragic extremes.

A well-made film telling a shocking story. At times it was quite difficult to watch due to the realism and the feeling of personal connection it invoked. A look into the dark side of the human psyche. I enjoyed the Q&A session with the director but we are left without answers as to why this happened.

the film Joe Cinque's Consolation a real life tragedy & a movie based on Helen Garner's book ...

it is showing at the Palace Cinema as part of the 24th Greek Film Festival ...

compelling and dramatic it is about a true crime story set in Canberra in October 1997 ...

this movie has a slow burn and depicts Canberra and the suburbs in all its many shades including student life at ANU University and the general boredom felt by some ...

it is about the relationship between a genuinely nice but naive guy and a very troubled narcissistic young girl ...
her troubles only intensify aided by her friends ...
there are some early sex scenes but totally in context as the relationship develop ...

it is an excellent movie and though based on fact offers the audience much
re: life in general ...

It's a heartbreaking and disturbing story, portrayed very well by the lead actors. This is based on a true story, and it is both shocking and sad.
