Written and performed by Nilaja Sun
Pike St. sees one-woman wonder Nilaja Sun return to Australia in her first solo theatre show since the success of her sold-out Melbourne Festival hit and OBIE-award-winning show, No Child.
In the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge, a struggling Puerto Rican family brace for the mother of all storms. Unable to move her teenage daughter Candace - who cannot move or breathe on her own - from their crumbling terrace, Evelyn fights to keep the electricity flowing to her daughter’s respirator. Disaster descends, but this is Manhattan's Lower East Side, and in Pike Street hope might be just down the hall.
Featuring her trademark humour, political incisiveness, and virtuosity, Sun brings to life the entirety of the Lower East Side; from decorated Puerto Rican war veteran Manny, to octogenarian downstairs neighbour Mrs. Applebaum, to Candace herself.
