Black T-shirt Collection

Black T-shirt Collection

Written and performed by Inua Ellams

A game-changer in British theatre, don’t miss Inua Ellams as he brings his acclaimed one-man show to Melbourne.

Ellams has charmed audiences around the world with his laid-back charisma and melodic storytelling style, and received great acclaim for his 2017 National Theatre production Barber Shop Chronicles.

Black T-shirt Collection tells the story of two Nigerian brothers whose differences – one gay, one straight; one Christian, one Muslim – are nothing compared to the fierce bond they share.

From humble beginnings in Nigerian markets they build a t-shirt brand that takes them on an adventure around the world: to the bazaars of Cairo, the nightclubs of Europe and the sweatshops of China.

Black T-shirt Collection began its journey at the National Theatre of Great Britain, and carries with it all that is most urgent today, wrestling with migration, religion, homophobia and consumer culture.

“A spoken-theatre performer with a quiet, compelling presence and a tripping tongue” – The Guardian UK

"… a tingling, resonant celebration of the art of solo performance" – London Evening Standard

It was amazing.
Ending was unexpected and shocking but wonderful.

This show was fantastic in its content and delivery. It dealt with the big themes of race. religion, sexuality and globalisation with a poetic and nuanced performance.

Really enjoyed this show. Fascinating and very engaging solo performance. Story telling that intrigues, amuses and captures your attention fully, takes us to many far away places and tells us much of the common threads of humanity we share, and of the fears, conflicts and issues that we grapple with all around the world. Go see it!

This story was strange. Powerful storytelling skills by Inua Ellams.

Ireneo

Enthralling story which gave us insight into the challenges people face in Nigeria. Very well acted.

claudz

Powerful. Realistic. Beautiful and so so sad. Thank you.

Yvonne

We loved the show. Inua delivered the story in a very direct and open way. The storyline while quite sad at the end was interspersed with witty humour. We would definitely recommend this show.

MelanieSearle

Brilliant piece of work. Interaction of current events and important issues of homophobia, marriage, globalisation, fair-trade and acceptance - make time to see Inua Ellams deeply personal and beautifully transparent performance.

marek

Completely immerses you in the web of the story.

zigzac

Beautiful performance, far exceeded my expectations.

Wonderfully told. Inuam Ellams tells a dramatic story with an unexpected and dramatic ending. My onlu complaints is that the sound effects were very very loud for no reason really!

Helrog

Go see it, even if you have to purchase tickets. Absolutely fantastic
Thank you

eggie

It was a sad story but not told with enough pathos and was too culturally specific to have universal impact. The delivery while impressive from a memory perspective lacked drama and modulation.

Left much to think about at the end

Monicarklein

Good but would recommend sitting near the front. Quite dark but a great storyteller and compelling story

ianventor

Inua presented a story that became more compelling as it developed. We were in the fourth row, so we could hear OK.

Fantastic story teller which had you intrigued till the end.

cicek

The biggest issue for me was that I couldn't hear a significant part of it, particularly the softer spoken parts and those with music in the background, so had trouble being absorbed into the story line and following it through.

Gibees

yes a great story teller ...
a funny & then tragic tale ...
the sound & audio could be improved as sadly i
found it quite hard to hear much of the story
& detail ...
my partner didn't however ...
we enjoyed it ...

3.5* "Depressing" said my guest. A solid show that was performed well, but some might feel that repetition makes it feel a little long, even though it's described as only 70 minutes without interval. Lack of microphone might mean that some towards the back will struggle to hear the softer sections.

Wow, what a great storyteller and such a soothing voice. Most enjoyable and interesting show, visiting many current issues.

With a minimalist setting, just a man and a story, Inua Ellams gently leads the audience through an enthralling tale to it's dramatic conclusion. Many important issues are touched upon by this talented artist.

duncan

A fabulously fluid telling of a wonderful, albeit tragic tale. A must see
