A string quartet is more than an ensemble, it’s a family.
Few are as tightly-knit as the Debussy String Quartet, four musicians who have decided to go their own way together. Based in Lyon, France, its members are the founders of ‘Les Cordes en Ballade’ a chamber music festival and an academy of chamber music in the South of France, where they perform and teach each summer.
Since 1990, the Quartet has forged a sound and a style that sets them apart in a world of blandly efficient international quartets, being both organic and adventurous, the Debussy’shave even collaborated with Australia’s acclaimed Circa physical theatre troupe.
Their more traditional concerts and recordings are renowned for their passion, elegance and detail, as exemplified in the three classic quartets they’ll perform. The DebussyString Quartet has established its reputation as one of the finest quartets touring and recording today. Shostakovich’s brief, grief-stricken
Quartet No.7 and Beethoven’s dark, disturbed Serioso are like eavesdropping on the composer’s innermost thoughts. The Debussy Quartet excels at these intimate, intense conversations. Ravel’s sweepingly melodious and magical quartet is one of the Debussy String Quartet’s most beloved works, and their performances of this masterpiece arelegendary.
The Debussy Quartet’s extensive discography includes the acclaimed Decca label release of the landmark Mozart Requiem recording, along with their highly regarded mixed chamber music repertoire. Their much-anticipated new album featuring Marc Mellit’s quartets was released on May 19th, 2017. Recorded in France in the company of the contemporary composer, the album is available on Evidence Classics.
