Chances are you have seen some of William Yang’s photographs in the major galleries of Australia. Or you may have seen his documentary film that aired on ABC television (William Yang: My Generation). William is one of Australia’s most celebrated independent artists, renowned for his poignant work, exploring social diversity, belonging and travel.
The Story Only I Can Tell is the generic story of William’s life. His forebears migrated from China to Australia over a hundred years ago and subsequent generations adapted to western culture. William grew up in North Queensland on a tobacco farm, and has made his way in the world as an architect, a playwright, a photographer, a visual artist, a film-maker, and now a story-teller.
He has led a varied life, working alongside many of Australia’s best-known artists from all artforms, including Patrick White, Brett Whitely and Jenny Kee. His amazing story touches on themes like photography, being Chinese in the West, landscape, being gay and cultural diversity.
“William Yang’s performances are among the enduring pleasures of Australian Theatre”
John McCallum THE AUSTRALIAN
“The strength of the work, apart from its structure, is the beauty of the images. The portraits shimmer with live.” Bryce Hallett SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
