MADAME

MADAME

Adding a little spice to a waning marriage, Anne and Bob (Academy Award® nominees Toni Collette and Harvey Keitel), a wealthy and well-connected American couple move into a manor house in romantic Paris. While preparing a particularly luxurious dinner for sophisticated international friends, our hostess discovers there are 13 guests. Panic-stricken, Anne insists her loyal maid, Maria (Rossy de Palma), disguise herself as a mysterious Spanish noblewoman to even out the numbers. But a little too much wine and some playful chat lead Maria to accidently endear herself to a dandy British art broker (Michael Smiley). Their budding romance will have Anne chasing her maid around Paris and finally plotting to destroy this most unexpected and joyous love affair.

This charming Parisian comedy opens in cinemas nationally this August 17.

Screening in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane and Perth

'Madame' is a tale of class, social standing & perceptions. When real love is actually demonstrated, it is quickly extinguished when the realisation is made that the loved one does not 'fit' into the class circle by having no claim to position or wealth. Maria (Rossy De Palma) superbly plays the innocent party, while Anne (Toni Collette) uses poignant sarcasm to constantly remind Maria of her lowly, social standing. This is a film to watch, dissect and ponder the social games some people play for their own gains.

Madame is the story of a lonely yet wealthy socialite, Anne (Toni Colette), who is married to her art-dealer husband, Bob (Harvey Keitel). Through chance, Maria (Rossy de Palma), Anne's maid, finds herself thrust into a high society dinner party as a guest. She is instructed by Anne to blend in, not drink too much and stay quiet.

Meanwhile, Bob's son, a lack-lustre novelist, Steven (Tom Hughes) is also attending this lavish dinner party. He is in search of a good story and a creative spark. He decides to amuse himself and use the privileged information about the maid to start a rumour. At the dinner party, Maria can't help herself; she tells jokes, enjoys the expensive wine, and is anything but quiet. To Anne's surprise, she catches the eye of David (Michael Smiley), a wealthy friend of Bob.

Soon a love story develops between David and Maria. Steven watches this love story unfold and begins writing the script for his new novel "The Maid". One lie breeds another and as is often in life, lies surface and the uncomfortable truths play out. Towards the end of the film, one is left wondering which door will open and which will shut, all the while, hoping that love will triumph.

This is a wonderful, light comedy on the topics of happiness, love, risk and managing disappointments.
