The forest comes alive in Victorian Opera's new production of Janáček’s Cunning Little Vixen. One of the great masterpieces of early twentieth century music, this rarely-heard opera will be staged for five performances only.
Celebrating the beauty of nature and cycle of life, Cunning Little Vixen muses on the interaction between human and animal life. Set in an idyllic forest, the story follows a Vixen’s lyrical journey from youth to adulthood.
Janáček's music pulses with life and colour, majesty and grandeur. A joyous, life-affirming treat for all lovers of music and theatre and is considered a perfect introduction to opera for families and first-timers.
Running time is approx. 90 minutes with one 20 minute interval. Suitable for ages 9+

I had never been to an opera before and I didn't know what to expect. It was a greatly told story, loved the character costumes, and I am glad of the subtitling of the music as it was hard to follow at times. All round a good experience.

A delightful production of Janacek's opera. Captured the beauty of the woods very well in costuming, lighting, sets and choreography. Suited the Fairy Tales theme of this year's programming.

I thought costumes were spectacular compared with other Victoria Opera performances I've seen. Obviously not professional singers but good on them for getting up there and doing what they love. Sets and lighting were very effective. Sung in English and easy to understand so a goodboperetta to take kids to.
Great performance
Cute, colourful costumes for creatures. Sometime the music didn't match the singing. Lead male vocal was very strong, other voices could do with a boost in volume. Would have liked to have seen more pizzazz throughout the show to sell the metaphor of cunning little Vixen.

An interesting opera with beautiful costumes and an amasing stage settting. My friend and I enjoyed it a lot.

Scenery was beautiful, music was delightful. This was our first opera and didn't know what to expect but Overall it was very sweet.
A well produced and technically able production which somehow, in its polished artifice, failed to provide, for me, engagement or convincing immersion for the pieces highs and lows, whimsies and sadnesses of life's cycle.
Just what you expect from an opera, singing
Humorously creative and Wonka-esque costuming. Music was delightful and magical. The emotional gravity and resigned nostalgia at its conclusion surprised me.
This opera provided a very different musical and theatrical experience with its highly imaginative, innovative style...not your "usual" opera at all. The background reading in the program drew attention to just how accomplished the performers all are and they showed us this at firsthand, much to the appreciation of the general audience and ourselves.

Loved the costumes and authentic animal portrayals...the characterisations gave us some unexpected humorous moments. An interesting and entertaining production.
The sets and animal costumes were colourful and lovely to look at. The music was not traditional and was surprisingly unexpected to me as a semi regular opera attendee. Worth a look if you are looking for something a bit different to the norm.

Loved the music and the staging and costumes. Dissapointged in the singing. Even looking at the Surtitles I could not understand much of the singing.

This was my first Opera and I brought along my nine year old son, we both thought it was magical. The story was beautiful and contemplated the circle of life. The costumes were spot on and the singing vixen was outstanding. This experience will stay with me for a long time.
