It's a wonderful tradition in the West - on the First Saturday after the Melbourne Cup.
Presented by Doug Heywood and Hobsons Bay City Council.
Handel's Messiah with the Camberwell Chorale and the Camerata Orchestra.
Loved and performed throughout the world, performances of Handel's Messiah aren't just concerts they are a musical institution. Spanning 265 years.
With excerpts that are familiar to nearly every western ear, Messiah is Handel's best known work, although this was not a status that it enjoyed until the last few years of his life, with the inception of annual performances in Handel's oratorio seasons and charitable benefit concerts at the Foundling Hospital (an organisation for underprivileged children, and which still exists today as The Thomas Coram Foundation).
The work was not originally envisaged as a Christmas tradition, but was intended as a timely thought-provoker for Lent and Easter.
The Williamstown performance was augmented last year with local community members swelling the ranks of the Camberwell Chorale for both the rehearsal and the performance.
