Ash Flanders: Playing to Win

Ash Flanders: Playing to Win

How do you win in a world where eight-year-olds on YouTube are the new gurus; where Hollywood stars dance alone at their own premieres; where even your own parents disparage you as “the flavour of the month”? How do you stay optimistic? How do you maintain your dignity? Ash wouldn’t know.

Local fey nuisance Ash Flanders (Lilith: The Jungle Girl, Meme Girls, co-founder of Sisters Grimm) blends together song and story, pop culture and personal tragedy, with his unrivalled brand of acerbic humour.

From the Green Room Award winning team of Ash Flanders, director Stephen Nicolazzo and musical director Dave Barclay (the three collaborated on Negative Energy Inc., Special Victim), prepare yourself for a hilarious rumination on the entertainment biz, broken dreams and the human desperation needed to succeed.

Following a highly successful 2015 Melbourne Cabaret Festival season, and now with a full band, Playing to Win returns with an updated exorcism of shame.

Winner – Green Room Award, "Best Writing in Cabaret", Special Victim

"Broadly entertaining, bright and hilarious, but there’s always something darker and heavier that sneaks up on you and shakes you up. It’s a rare gift." – The Daily Review

Not quite what I thought I was going to, and it was enjoyable anyway. Thanks for the opportunity.

Fantastic show, first time I have seen Ash Flanders but won't be the last. Went for 90 minutes and truly engaging the whole time. Highly recommend.

High energy show with good backing band

bestaussiechick

Good show but just not super.

Demon

Very blunt self analysis and sharp observations of societal behaviours. Ash has you laughing at what is inherently sad. Great singer and engaging performer backed up by a very professional and talented band.

Very funny interesting and topical.. But subtle and poignant playing of himself n a deep,y revealing mix of genres

Ash Flanders has talent and provides a show, which while happy to poke fun at stereotypes, manages to often lift and even embrace them to both meaning and enjoyment via sharp (and sometimes very sharp) observations - derived from a rich (and we get to feel, honestly recounted :) history of his life on the stage. His occasional bitter is dulled and forgotten by his often impressive energetic kicks back at life. In a festival where many artists are sitting on their stereotypes, Ash Flanders is not just standing up, but inviting you for a jog! Recommended.

I loved Ash Flanders. Good performer. Sarcastic and bitter but also hopeful.

The message of the show at the end was smart and hilarious
