Macdeth

Macdeth

The perfect show for young audiences who love the classics with a twist!

Performed in an immediate, filmic style, this show is great for kids who have never seen Shakespeare or think the classics are a ticket to the land of sleep.

This funny, cautionary and fake-bloody tale combines Shakespeare’s rich language with a healthy dose of invention and idiocy. It pulls no punches, leaving in all the murder and foul play; all the injustice and cruelty; all the horror of one man’s ambition gone horribly wrong.

This is Shakespeare unplugged and re-wired, performed with stupidity and skill!

Macdeth was developed with the assistance of Arts Centre Melbourne.

Aimed at kids and not appearing hugely polished as a production (but well-rehearsed), this was a fun show, but I was surprised to see it at the Arts Centre. It wove quotes form the original play in quite well with explanations of their meanings quite smartly, so that kids could learn about Shakespearean English. Beyond that, it was fun, but often felt like it lacked finesse and energy from the cast.

Great use of music though and some great comic moments. A kid next to us commented to her friend three quarters through that she was starting to get bored. But at final curtain call they both told each other they'd enjoyed it.

Overall, it was a decent show, with some potential if polished a bit more. But I question the need for graphic portrayals of violence for kids. Even some of the themes (or most of them in Macbeth) as adult themes, so it was a bit unsettling to watch this fed to kids.

Lots of humour. Very interesting interpretation of Shakespeare's play.

Nicely sandwiched lines of Shakespearean vintage with lots of laughs and even a modern reference to Donald Trump. Acting was fine staging perhaps could do with more glitz.

Lots of humour, a bit twisted, but I guess it makes it easier for kids to understand.

Lots of fun for both young and not so young...a very amusing precis of MacBeth....entertaining, interjected with seriousness at critical moments with poignant lines taken from the original! Well done to you all! Highly recommended!
