Wagered with many of the above comments. Torturous to watch as well as for the victims, but cinematography good and an interesting history.

Christianity was the outlawed faith in 1633. Believers moved about in secrecy and in the darkness of the night. All Christian rituals were negated by extreme violent acts- burning, drowning, executions - to demonstrate Japan's enforced persecution of Christians.
This film is a very powerful indictment of the fate of believers who dared to preach an alternative religion in the country of Japan.
The Inquisitor was relentlessly cruel in his persecution of the Christians until he achieved their 'silence.'

This is a gripping & poignant film which in turn leaves the viewer 'silent' as he contemplates the scenes of inconceivable cruelty. An impressionable film!

I felt emotionally battered after watching this movie! A very long movie which I will reflect upon over the coming days. Certainly thought provoking and an interesting insight into human nature, faith and principles.
