Melbourne International Arts Festival | Gong Myoung

Melbourne International Arts Festival | Gong Myoung

The hugely innovative Korean ensemble Gong Myoung take traditional instruments, and some of their innovations, to create a new sound in Korean music. These classical artists are taking their homeland and gradually the rest of the world by storm by designing instruments and music that create a fusion of artistry and new sound.

Gong Myoung’s debut in 1998 was described in the Korean press as “exceptional, unconventional” and their music was considered “unprecedented” by traditional Korean musicians. However the four members of the group all majored in Korean Music at University and they use the musical traditions they have been brought up with as a basis for their contemporary global sound.

Gong Myoung have opened up new possibilities for Korean music through their creation of modern and innovative electrified sound. Incorporating computer sampling with new and traditional instruments they produce world music that is at times vibrant and explosive and at others calming and ambient. The musicians in the group all have an incredible passion for music and their energy and talent is sure to delight Festival music lovers.
