The Israel Camerata Jerusalem Orchestra

The Israel Camerata Jerusalem is the leading chamber orchestra in Israel today. The Camerata was founded in 1983 by Avner Biron, who has been its music director and permanent conductor since then. The story of the Israel Camerata Jerusalem is unique. As an experiment in Israeli melting pot endeavours, it has been hugely successful in bringing together established and emerging musicians. As a cultural endeavour, it has achieved remarkable excellence in one of the most significant – and fiercely competitive – areas of the arts: classical music.

Creativity, inventiveness and originality are the watchwords for conductor Avner Biron’s versatile musical activities. By intensive and inspiring work, he has brought the orchestra to the highest standard in Israeli musical life, and won worldwide recognition for it. Joining the Camerata is Israeli cellist Zvi Plesser, a musician with a remarkably varied career as cello soloist, chamber musician and distinguished educator.

Acclaimed cellist Zvi Plesser is soloist in Dvorak’s impassioned concerto, one of the most magnificent in the repertoire: rhapsodic, elegiac and heroic. Ukrainian/Israel composer Mark Koptyman was inspired by Jewish sacred and folk traditions, crafting works intricately melodic beauty. Beyond all this… is a major work from an important voice in Israeli classical music. In the words of the composer, it is “a mixture of reflections of the feelings, thoughts and dreams about the people and the country to which I belong.” In a similarly optimistic vein, Haydn’s Symphony No.85 is a joyous outpouring of joie de vivre, embraced as much by audiences today as it was in Paris in 1787. This virtuoso showcase for a chamber orchestra was apparently Marie Antoinette’s favourite.
