Graduate Singers’ 2016 Season Opens | Of Love and Nature

The first of three 2016 subscription choral concerts by Adelaide’s leading medium-sized choir Graduate Singers(Grads), will be presented in Elder Hall on Saturday 7 May at 7.30pm. Entitled Of Love and Nature the first concert program will offer a kaleidoscope of works spanning from the Renaissance era to the present day, the program explores the time-honoured themes of love and nature, and their curious relationship.

Showcasing works by Australian composer Daniel Brinsmead, early music masters Purcell and Tallis, American choral wunderkind Eric Whitacre, King’s Singer-turned composer Bob Chilcott and more, this is a concert that will surely comfort, surprise, and inspire.

Announcing the concert, Musical Director Karl Geiger said, ‘Central to this program are two evocative song cycles: Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs – an exquisite setting of poems by the composer’s wife, each capturing a moment shared by the two lovers, and Bob Chilcott’s The Making of the Drum – an exuberant evocation of the natural world and celebration of a drum brought to life’.

Graduate Singers will be joined by three of Adelaide’s finest instrumentalists: Michael Ierace (piano), Andrew Penrose (percussion), and Anna Freer (violin).

We thoroughly enjoyed this performance by the Graduate Singers and applaud them for mastering such a complex repertoire. The singing and musicianship was excellent!

Elder Hall is an excellent venue for listening to music, so we had no issues at all in that regard, however, given many of the house lights were on the for the entire performance, the mood and atmosphere were compromised somewhat. I would have rated this as a 5 if the house lights were down, as I know I would've loved to have been sitting in a darkened auditorium focusing on the performance rather than feeling a little agitated by the lighting. Obviously, there must be a sound reason for having the entire venue lit but it didn't work for this audience member. I now regret not asking why when I had the opportunity.
