Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune

Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune

The play focuses on two lonely people whose first date ends with them tumbling into bed. Frankie is a waitress and Johnny is a short-order cook who works in the same restaurant. It is their first encounter, Frankie is hoping that Johnny will now put on his clothes and depart so she can return to her usual routine of watching TV and eating ice-cream. But Johnny, a compulsive talker and romantic, has other ideas. He is convinced that he loves Frankie, a notion that she, at first, considers to be ridiculous.

Frankie’s poor history with men leaves her hesitant to commit, having experienced more disappointments than delights in life. Johnny is the veteran of one broken marriage already. As moonlight streams into Frankie’s Manhattan apartment, their sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious interplay hints at a relationship beyond a “one night stand”. But will it last once the sun comes up? And where does Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” feature in this drama comedy?

Terrence McNally’s bittersweet classic two hander was first performed off Broadway in 1987 featuring Kathy Bates as Frankie and D.Murray Abraham as Johnny. It was revived on Broadway in 2002 starring Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci. The play received Nominations for Best Revival of a Play and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play.

SEASON: 12-29 November 2015

Enjoyed it. It was my "play of the year".

Best two-hander performance seen in the theatre. Being so close to actors in the small space made it so much more intimate.

Captivating performance. Engaging, fast paced script. Great Show!

absolutely great! So engaging and fast paced that you didn't NEED an interval! thoroughly enjoyed it and the fact that Debussy's Clare de Lune is my favourite piece was just an extra bonus!

duncan

An interesting and intense play. Great performances by both actors.

I agree an interval is always appreciated but would have lost the continuity and flow. Thanks for the opportunity...and a great little theatre in the depths of the city!

Naomiddd

An interesting play with great performances by both actors.

Impressive performance with a lot of dialogue. Lovely soundtrack, and a play which went through several emotions. It is quite long with no interval, and didn't really resonate strongly with us - but it was entertaining and provoked a few thoughts.

marydoc

Super performances by two very seasoned actors. A very enjoyable night at the theatre.

Enjoyed it - although my seat had limited vision for some parts - make sure you sit more towards the middle than the right hand side back edge where the column will obscure your vision.
