Russian Resurrection Film Festival

The Russian Resurrection Film Festival in Australia and New Zealand has reached a milestone in 2018. We are celebrating our 15-Year Anniversary! This milestone could not have been reached, if it were not for our loyal patrons. Thank you and welcome to the XV Russian Resurrection Film Festival.

We have selected 16 new films for the program this year. The legendary Konstantin Khabenskiy returns to our screens this year in two features: the exhilarating sexy-thriller Selfie and Sobibor, a powerful WWII film about the only successful breakout from a concentration camp, which he also directed.

Following the success of the FIFA World Cup in Russia this year, the festival will follow up with a screening of the hugely popular new sports drama, The Coach starring heart throb Danila Kozlovsky in the lead role and taking a seat for the first time in the director’s chair. Be sure to join us in the land of Belogorie, the setting for the wonderful family fantasy, The Last Warrior, where fairy-tale characters, magic, and enchanted sword fights are part of everyday life! Then there is the figure skating musically rich melodrama Ice, a hilarious comedy about male strippers called Night Shift and a couple of gripping Russian dramas – Pagans, where a hidden blind faith in a miracle sets of a family confrontation. The second is Jumpman a new film made by provocative director, Ivan Tverdovskiy. The film offers a potent indictment of the corruption in Russian society but through a perverse scam.

One of the underlying central themes for Russian cinema in 2018 seems to be about friendship. I’m Losing Weight, a touching romantic comedy really examines this theme. After her boyfriend dumps her for being overweight, Anna (played by up and coming young talent Aleksandra Bortich) decides to change her ways and enlists her fellow food-lover, Nick, to help her lose weight - it is their friendship that helps her to find happiness. In another film, Bortich brilliantly plays a gloomy 22-year-old with a mysterious gift – she sees ghosts in the international premiere and nail-biting thriller The Soul Conductor. And speaking of female leads, be sure to see Irina Kupchenko’s latest outing in the action-drama, The Challenge. A remarkable film loosely based on the Nord-Ost Moscow theatre hostage crisis of 2002.

The retrospective collection in 2018 showcases a selection of award-winning Soviet films chosen to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Lenfilm Studios in St. Petersburg and the 90-year anniversary of renowned director Vitaliy Melnikov.
